Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick eased his tension after the arrest of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, ending a perilous couple of days for residents of the state, in the way that so many other Bostonians did; he got drunk, according to the Boston Herald.
During a question and answer session while speaking to a marketing firm in Cambridge Patrick opened up about his experiences throughout the entire ordeal following the tragic Boston Marathon bombing. The bombing that killed 3 people and injured 264 people was followed by a four day manhunt for the Tsarnaev brothers, during which the entire city of Boston and some of the suburbs were put on lockdown.
Patrick talked about a call he got from President Barack Obama while he was took a nap at the State House.
"He said, 'Deval, I'm briefed. What are you going to do about the city? You can't keep it locked down indefinitely,'" Patrick said. "I said, 'Mr. President, I know that...I'm trying to sort that out now.' Basically the state police had said we should end this...when we finish the door-to-door in Watertown."
Patrick mentioned that it was lucky they were able to capture Tsarnaev when they did as people would not have tolerated the lockdown for very much longer.
"Look, the reason why it worked out in the end is because we found him," Patrick said. "If we didn't find him then people would be bitching and moaning about how we kept them indoors all day."
Once Tsarnaev was captured Patrick headed to the Berkshires to unwind from the ordeal.
"I got out to the Berkshires around supper time (Saturday, April 20). I went for a quick swim and I went to a local restaurant...for supper by myself with a book. And I sat in the corner and Maggie, who runs the (restaurant) asked, 'Do you want to be near people or away from people?' I said, 'As far away as I can.' So she put me in the corner, me and my book on my iPad, and she starts bringing me things. Some of them edible. In fact, all the food was edible. She starts bringing me things to drink as a celebration. And by the end of the meal, I was actually quite drunk, by myself."
Michelle Merelle, co-owner of the restaurant, Rouge, told the Boston Herald that she was honored to host the governor and she didn't notice that he had been a bit over served.
"He wasn't tipsy," Merelle said. "I never would have known. We just wanted to nourish him."
Patrick forgot to bring any money with him that night and ended up having to leave without paying the bill; Merelle made sure to tell the Boston Herald that the governor paid his tab soon thereafter.
