Apple News: No Touch Screens coming to Mac, Software VP Says

Apple is best known for innovations and doing things its own way. The company has been widely successful with its iPhones, Macs and iPads, but if people are expecting a touch-screen Mac computer in the future, then they have a long wait. Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi said in an interview with CNET that the company has no plans of introducing Macs with touch screens.

Federighi spoke about the company's disinterest in upgrading the popular Mac lineup with touch-screen integration in an interview after the Apple event on Thursday. The tech giant launched a series of new devices at the special event, including an all-new 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 and an updated Mac Mini. On the software front, the company demonstrated the new features in the latest OS X Yosemite for Macs and iOS 8.1 for iPhones and iPads.

Even with the upgraded iMac, Apple doesn't find it fitting to see an iMac with a touch-screen. "We don't think it's the right interface, honestly," Federighi told CNET. "Mac is sort of a sit-down experience."

"We've really focused on building the best track pads we can, something where it feels [like] your posture's relaxed, it's a comfortable machine to use," he added. "And, of course, over the years we've experimented with all the technology, but we found it just wasn't good. ... We're not all that interested in building one."

While Apple may not be interested in the touch-screen integration for desktop computers, the PC industry has widely adopted the new technology. Microsoft's Windows 8 OS for desktops favored touch screen displays, prompting PC makers like Dell, Asus and others to build compatible devices.

If Apple has chosen to stay away from the latest tech, it has an explanation. Federighi said the OS X operation system is not a touch-friendly user interface and entirely different from its iOS software. But the company's former CEO Steve Jobs was against the big-screened iPhones, yet here we are with the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus.
