A man led police on a chase through the streets of Los Angeles driving an ambulance he stole after it arrived to save him.
The unnamed man, believed to be high on "spice," was being treated in the back of an ambulance in downtown Los Angeles late Sunday when he ripped out the IVs in his arm, leaped from the back of the vehicle and ran off, the Los Angeles Police Department told KTLA.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics were cleaning out the back of the ambulance when the patient sneaked into the driver's seat. Paramedics were able to hop out of the back before the patient fled the scene in the stolen ambulance, police told the station.
Authorities on the scene pursued the ambulance, which eventually crashed into a minivan about two miles from where it was taken. Two female passengers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, LAPD Sergeant Gia Rueda told the Los Angeles Times.
It is not clear who called paramedics to South San Pedro Street to treat the man for hallucinations. Police on the scene told KTLA the man said he had taken "spice," a dangerous synthetic form of marijuana that has been blamed for killing teenagers across the country.
The man is currently in custody at the LADP's Rampart Station, according to the LA Times.
