NHL: Calgary Flames Sign T.J. Brodie to Contract Extension

Calgary Flames' defenseman T.J. Brodie has signed a contract extension that will keep him in the organization for five more years, according to a report from TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie.

The deal is reportedly worth $23.25 million, for an average of $4.65 million per season. Brodie was in the final year of a two-year pact he signed in 2013, which paid him an average annual salary of $2.1 million, The Globe and Mail reported.

Calgary general manager Brad Treliving had this to say, via Jermain Franlkin of TSN, about signing Brodie; "These are hard minutes. Minutes against top players, special teams defending... Signing TJ it's a good day for us."

Brodie originally entered the league as the 114th pick in the 2008 draft. Considered a highly underrated player around the league, Brodie had 31 points, four goals and 27 assists in 81 games last season, while averaging 24:04 on-ice minutes a game, according to NBCSports.

"I will tell you this," said Treliving, via Franklin. "With this type of player in this market, the way things were going it wasn't going to get less expensive."

Treliving went on to say that Brodie is "going to be a building block" for the club.

The six-foot-two, 183-pound blueliner has 11 goals and 55 assists in 192 career NHL games, per The Globe and Mail.

Brodie played over 100 games in the AHL before becoming a full-time NHL player.

The 24-year-old has three goals and four assists in seven games thus far this season. He is also plus-5.
