Kansas City went from a Wild Card team to representing the AL in the World Series. James Shields opens the series on the mound for Kansas City, making his first start since Oct. 10 against Baltimore.
"I think this late in the year almost too much throwing is too much," he said, via ESPN. "So I've just rested my body up for tomorrow."
Shields gave up four earned runs on 10-hit ball in that no-decision against Baltimore, a performance he'll look to improve upon when he gets the start Tuesday against Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner, who's also coming off a no-decision.
Bumgarner allowed three earned runs on five-hit ball on Oct. 16 against St. Louis, helping the Giants close out the series and enjoy four days of rest before heading into the World Series.
While the rest is physically good for the Giants, catcher Buster Posey admitted it's a little different to have the extended layoff.
"It's definitely different because we have played so many games over the last 7 1/2 innings, eight months," said Posey. "But you just have to understand it's one of those things."
The Royals, who've had five days off, felt the same way about the layoff.
"If affects a bit with your timing, especially when trying to adjust to pitchers," said second baseman Omar Infante, referring to the possibility of hitters losing their rhythm during the time off. "It's hard to recover that groove you have."
