NFL: Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Isn’t Talking Contract With Jason Garrett Just Yet

Jason Garett bet on himself this season and it seems to be paying off so far.

The Dallas Cowboys are 6-1 in the final year of Garrett's contract and are in first place in the NFC East.

"I don't know that anybody has had a better, brighter vision of Jason's future than I do," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "I've always thought he had the potential to be a serious, consistent, winning coach in the NFL and still think that...I'm just glad to see him have this kind of success.

"His players hang on every word, and they're seeing what he's preaching works. That's an ideal set of circumstances for a coach that is looking for a big future in the NFL."

Despite the ringing endorsement, Jones was reluctant to get into any specifics when asked about a new deal for Garrett.

"I'm just not going to talk about it," Jones said of a new deal for Garrett. "We've got so many contracts that we're supposed to be needing to be talking about, now that things are going good. I'm not even going to begin to start anywhere. I'm just going to squat.

"I've got a lifetime of when it's too much, just sit down and think about it."

Star receiver Dez Bryant and current NFL leading rusher DeMarco Murray are due for new contracts. But Garrett seems to be taking a similar silent approach when the topic of a new contract comes up.

"If you just keep trying to do things the right way, the results on the scoreboard will hopefully take care of itself," he said. "And that's just the way I think. That's the way we try to help this team."

"That was the last answer I'm going to have about my contract."

The Cowboys have gone 8-8 in each of the last three seasons. Should Garrett and the Cowboys continue their top-tier play and get into the playoffs, a rich new contract for the coach would seem imminent.
