The New York Giants have lost their past two games without starting running back Rashad Jennings. Although blame is deserved by several on the team, missing Jennings hasn't helped New York's offense.
Jennings, who is out with a sprained knee, was off to a solid start this season with 396 yards on 91 carries (4.4 average) and two touchdowns. The Giants have averaged just 95 yards per game on the ground in Jennings' absence.
The team has a bye this week, which will give Jennings a small chance to return to game action in Week 9 against the Indianapolis Colts.
"As the doctors said, they think I'm right on track to be back here soon and it's going to be a day to day [situation]," Jennings said, according to NJ.com. "I'm going through my checkpoints. I want to see where it lays."
Coach Tom Coughlin, perhaps in an attempt to temper expectations, did not share Jennings' optimism.
"You're talking about a running back coming back from an MCL [sprain]," Coughlin said. "This is not an easy thing for Rashad either. He is well aware of that. It's his makeup we're counting on. Again, he's doing everything in his power, I can guarantee you that."
Rookie Andre Williams has managed just 110 yards and zero touchdowns on 35 rushing attempts while filling in for Jennings. A speedy return from Jennings would relegate Williams to backup duty once again.
Denard Robinson and Tre Mason are just a few of the viable free agents fantasy owners could pickup to replace Jennings in their lineups.
