If Toronto Raptors swingman Terrence Ross proves not to be the answer at the 3-spot this season, the team reportedly is likely to try to sign a wing player in free agency this summer. Toronto needs a 3-point shooter who can play defense to help take the team to the next level, according to Basketball Insiders' Nate Duncan.
Ross, the eighth overall pick of the 2012 draft, showed improvement in his sophomore season but still needs to push his game to another level. Duncan believes if Ross doesn't become a two-way wing player, Toronto could look for a replacement in the offseason.
"What (the Raptors) really need is a 3 and D guy on the wing if Ross is not the answer," Duncan wrote Tuesday. "He hasn't shown much ability to stop anyone, and you'll recall how they were obliterated by Joe Johnson (who hasn't done much of that the last few years) in the playoffs. They should have a reasonable amount of space this offseason even after re-signing Amir Johnson, which is also critical.
"Maybe there is hope (Bruno) Caboclo can be that guy long-term, but hard to imagine he's ready to be a winning contributor until at least year 3 for him."
Ross has improved each season - 6.4 points per game on 33.2 percent 3-point shooting to 10.9 points per game on 39.5 percent 3-point shooting - but needs to continue to develop, particularly on defense.
Two potential free agents Toronto might pursue are San Antonio Spurs swingman Danny Green and Phoenix Suns swingman Gerald Green, with Danny being the better fit.
