Sleater - Kinney Reuniting, Releasing New Album In January (HEAR IT)

Iconic indie - rock band Sleater - Kinney has reunited, will be releasing a new album on Jan. 20 and is planning a tour for early next year, NPR reported on Monday.

The band's first album in nearly 10 years will be called No Cities to Love and its first single, "Bury Our Friends," is already out.

The trio went on a musical hiatus eight years ago after their 2005 album The Woods was released. Carrie Brownstein, Sleater - Kinney's singer and guitarist, said the time was right to get back into the studio because the hunger, drive and energy between band members has amped up.

"We drifted apart in order to concentrate on other elements of our lives and careers. Sleater-Kinney isn't something you can do half-assed or half-heartedly. We have to really want it," Brownstein wrote in an email to NPR. "...We had no desire to revisit sounds and styles and paths we had treaded before. But in order to move forward, Corin and I worked together in a way that was more reminiscent of earlier albums like Dig Me Out."

Sleater - Kinney carved out a space in the riot grrrl feminist punk rock scene of the 1990's. As time went on, the group switched gears slightly and focused on a more indie rock sound, but generally stayed true to their original formula. Brownstein, who is now best known as being half of the Portlandia duo, mixed her vocals with lead singer Corin Tucker to give the band its wailing quality, The Verge reported.

Sleater - Kinney kicks off their tour in Spokane, Washington on Feb. 8 and will hit in order: Boise, Salt Lake City, Denver, Omaha, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C., New York City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Berlin, Germany, Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Paris France, Antwerp, Belgium, London, U.K., Manchester, U.K., Glasgow U.K. and Dublin, Ireland.
