A lot of country singers and songwriters write about old loves or lost loves or loves that are waiting for just the right time to walk back into their lives. For singer/songwriter Brantley Gilbert, that time is now.
Gilbert revealed that he is getting married to a girl he's written a lot of songs about - and that she was "the one that got away."
The "Small Town Throwdown" singer broke the news of his engagement during an interview Tuesday morning (Oct. 21) while chatting on the air with syndicated radio host Bobby Bones, according to the Taste of Country.
"I met this little girl 10 years ago. You'll hear her in most of my songs," he told Bones.
Gilbert said they had dated years ago, but then drifted away from each other. And now they're together again.
"I can honestly say I've never been happier."
One of the songs Gilbert penned about his once-lost love is "More Than Miles," from his 2011 "Halfway to Heaven" deluxe album. In the song, he sings:
"Cause that girl's in every song I sing / She's in every song I write / And that six string ridin' in her seat / Won't keep me warm tonight."
Gilbert also acknowledged that he wrote "You Don't Know Her Like I Do" about his new fiancée, who teaches at a school not far from the singer's house. That song is also on his "Halfway to Heaven" album. The lyrics proclaim:
"It's like she stole my way to breathe/ So don't try to tell me I'll stop hurting/ And don't try to tell me she ain't worth it / Cause you don't know her like I do."
"She was the one who got away for about five years," Gilbert explained.
Gilbert's well-publicized engagement to fellow singer Jana Kramer - who, ironically, had a hit with "Love" - ended last year. In the wake of the breakup, Gilbert has kept a low profile about his personal life.
Until now.
With the wedding on tap for next June, it's probably safe to say that Gilbert and his fiancée are themselves halfway to heaven.
