Husband and Wife of 73 Years Die Within a Day of Each Other, 'Call Me Home' He Told Her

Helen Auer died Oct. 15. Her husband Joe gave her a kiss and whispered, "Helen, call me home." Only 28 hours passed before Joe Auer answered Helen's call, according to The Guardian.

Joe and Helen were expecting their second child before Joe left to fight in World War II, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Helen mailed Joe a photo of her with their two children, Barry and Judy, whom Joe would meet when she was 3 years old.

Joe carried that photo for the rest of his life. "It never left his wallet," Jerry Auer, the youngest of Helen and Joe's 10 children, said. "It's still in there right now."

This sounds like a love story, and some may say it is, but it isn't a fairy tale. It is the story of an Ohio couple who stayed together, even in the end.

"They were simple, humble people, Jerry told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "They wanted nothing and got everything in return. If somebody were thinking of getting married, they could do a lot worse than to look at my parents."
