College Football News: Michigan QB Devin Gardner Says He’s Been Called 'N-word' Several Times This Season

Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner told The Detroit News that he's had racial slurs flung at him repeatedly this season.

"I've been called the N-word so many times this year," Gardner said. "One guy told me I was the N-word, and said I know N-words can't play quarterback. And I was like, are we not past this? Say what you want about my skill, but come on."

Gardner has been Michigan's starter for nearly two seasons now and despite the racial vitriol thrown his way, he says it doesn't bother him. A regular attendee of Athletes in Action meetings and Bible study, Gardner points to a specific scripture that helps him maintain his positive attitude.

"It says to counter with joy any time you face adversity," Gardner said.

Gardner, who has struggled with on-field challenges as well as offensive hecklers, constantly keeps this philosophy in mind in his daily life.

"I thought, 'All right, there has to be something to it,'" Gardner said. "People are going to be confused why you're happy or why you can withstand scrutiny. I just think it shows your worth is not based on what other people think. Your worth is bigger than that.

"I feel like that's what helped me tremendously, you know, being benched, or not playing as well or playing well. I feel like I've been able to handle it. Before I used to think I'm going to be unshaken because I'm going to be a tough guy. When it comes to the spiritual aspect, I was brought up that way, and that's actually how you're supposed to be."

His positivity is a bright spot in what has been a disappointing season for Michigan so far at 3-4.

"Every game is winnable. I feel we can win every game," he said. "Some people say it and don't believe it. I believe we can win every single game. I feel we're hitting our stride on offense. I feel if I hadn't been hurt in that (Penn State) game, we would have beat them by more. And on defense we're playing well."

The fifth-year senior will be tested this week when he leads the Wolverines against No. 8 Michigan State. Gardner has completed 63 percent of his pass attempts this season while throwing for 1,103 yards, six touchdowns and eight interceptions.
