San Francisco made a statement Monday with a 7-1 rout of Kansas City. The Giants took an early three-run lead in the first inning, and starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner pitched six scoreless innings before giving up the only run of the night to Royals catcher Salvador Perez on a homer in the seventh.
"They've obviously been on a great run. You don't get here without that," Bumgarner said, via ESPN. "I think our team is concentrating on what they need to do, not what the Royals are doing."
Perez's solo homerun ended Bumgarner's scoreless streak at 21 innings, but the left-hander still extended his postseason record to 3-0.
"I would tell you I wasn't thinking about it, but you know," he said. "There's so much talk about it. Obviously, a World Series game is not something you tend to forget."
While the 7-1 loss stings, Royals manager Ned Yost said he isn't disheartened.
"We didn't expect to come in here and sweep the San Francisco Giants," he told reporters. "We knew that this was a series that was going to go deep. We know how tough they are. They swung the bats really well."
Jake Peavy starts on Wednesday for San Francisco. His last start - a 5-4 loss Oct. 12 at St. Louis - resulted in a no-decision, in which he allowed two earned runs through four innings.
He'll be opposed by Royals rookie pitcher Yordano Ventura, who's coming off a no-decision after giving up four runs Oct. 11 in a 6-4 win at Baltimore.
