British actress Carey Mulligan has been revealed as the top choice to play a young Hillary Clinton in the biopic "Rodham," the Daily Mail reports.
The 28-year-old actress is said to have caught the eye of director James Ponsoldt. Sources told The Hollywood Reporter" that Mulligan and Ponsoldt will have a meeting to discuss the film. According to the website, the role of young Clinton is "one of the most sought-after among Hollywood's under-40 set in years."
Even though Mulligan is said to be a favorite, no official announcements have been made. Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone and Reese Witherspoon were all reported as vying for the role as well.
"They're all wonderful actress," Ponsoldt told The Independent. "We're very fortunate that a lot of really great actors are interested in playing these roles. We're in an enviable position."
Ponsoldt added that the search for the right actress is not going to be an easy task because there are a lot of qualities they are looking for."
"Regardless of people's political affiliation or how they feel about Hillary Clinton, you don't find people who question the quality of her intelligence or her drive," Ponsoldt told the website. "I want a wonderful actress who could embody that."
The movie will center around a young Hillary Clinton as a law student at Yale, her involvement in President Nixon' impeachment and her budding romance with Bill Clinton. Young il-Kim, the movie's writer, told the Politico that he wants the movie to show a "more personal side" of the former Secretary of State.
"It's a journey of a woman who was torn between her personal desires and her professional ambition," Kim told Politico. "Both literally pulled her thousands of miles apart, because Bill did not want to leave Arkansas, and she did not want to leave Washington, D.C."
This is a highly anticipated movie. Kim's script made Hollywood's 2012 "Black List." Each year only the most buzzed about movies yet to head into production are compiled together for the "Black List." Other films on the list included "The Social Network," "Juno" and "The King's Speech."
"Rodham" is set to be released in 2016 around the time of the presidential election.
