"Gotham" will add a friendly face to its growing threat of villainous characters.
Morena Baccarin will play the gifted and dedicated physician Dr. Leslie Thompkins on the Fox series, according to Deadline. The sci-fi genre star joins the "Gotham" cast as a recurring character that will become a regular in season two, if the show gets renewed.
The old friend of Bruce Wayne's parents will apply her skills to help Gotham's most in need at the newly opened Arkham Asylum's Home for the Criminally Insane. Her cool under pressure personality will draw her to James Gordon and move her further into "dangerous waters," according to Deadline.
Thompkins character served as a surrogate parent for Bruce Wayne after the murder of his parents in the Batman comics. She later became a confidant for Batman and dedicated to helping Gotham's sick and poor. Writer Dennis O'Niel and artist Dick Giordano created Thompkins, who made her first appearance in "Detective Comics" #457 in March 1976.
Baccarin received an Emmy nomination for her role on "Homeland" as Damien Lewis' wife. She's best known for her role in Joss Whedon's short-lived series "Firefly" and the subsequent movie "Serenity." Her other sci-fi credits include the ABC remake of "V" and the Stargate SG-1 series.
"Gotham" airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
