Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III now expects to return even sooner than Week 1. The reigning Rookie of the Year said "without a doubt" he will be completely recovered from knee surgery and ready to go by the start of training camp, the Associated Press reports.
Griffin is recovering from his recent knee surgery at "superhuman" speeds. So fast, in fact, that he believes he'll be ready well before his Week 1 goal. While some thought his aim to play in September's season opener might be far-fetched, Griffin has upped the ante and intends to participate in Washington's training camp, which starts July 25.
"...Training camp's a month and a half away. That's why I say without a doubt (I'll be ready for it)," Griffin told reporters on Thursday.
Griffin went down on Jan. 6 during the first round playoffs against the Seattle Seahawks; he underwent surgery three days later to repair his torn ACL and LCL. Redskins coach Mike Shanahan originally projected Griffin to miss seven-to-nine months. Although playing during the preseason was a possibility given that timeline, Griffin's much publicized goal was to be ready for the Sept. 9 season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
An even earlier return to action is a positive sign for fans. Griffin led the team last season to a 10-6 record and its first NFC East division title in 13 years. He threw for 3,200 yards and 20 touchdowns and rushed for 815 yards and seven touchdowns, ultimately winning the NFL Rookie of the Year award.
