Los Angeles Boy Struck And Killed By Ice Cream Truck

A 7-year-old boy is dead after he was struck and killed by an ice cream truck in South Los Angeles, California, on Wednesday, authorities said.

The unnamed 7-year-old was riding an electronic bike alongside the ice cream truck a little after 7 p.m. when he lost his balance, fell under the truck's back wheels and was run over, the Los Angeles Police Department told KABC-TV.

"I heard a big commotion, I came outside, I saw the little kid laying on the ground, and I saw the mother weeping over the child, saying 'Oh my child, oh my God," a witness named William told the station.

The boy was rushed to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center where he underwent surgery but later died.

Police said after the accident a group of people in the area attacked the driver of the truck, which may have been unlicensed.

"Right now, it appears it was bricks and sticks, and somebody may have pulled a knife on him," LAPD Sergeant Timothy Colson told the station.

It's unclear who was involved in the attack. The driver, whose name was not released, suffered a few bruises but was not seriously injured.

The child's death has been ruled an accident and the driver will not be charged, police said.
