The 1-6 Jacksonville Jaguars are slogging through another tough season with a scant few bright spots to speak of.
The team has been offered a single glimmer of hope recently via running back Denard Robinson's play in place of the injured Toby Gerhart.
With Gerhart on the shelf this past weekend nursing a foot sprain, Robinson toted the rock against the Cleveland Browns to the tune of 127 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries, prompting head coach Gus Bradley to say, "Yeah, I think so," according to The Florida Times-Union per HNGN's Brandon Katz, when asked if Robinson could remain the top back going forward.
Now that Gerhart is feeling "pretty good," the team may look to use a running back-by-committee approach moving forward.
"He said it felt pretty good," Jaguars' coach Gus Bradley said, according to the Times-Union. "I think the last two weeks have been tough on him, but today he felt a lot better and felt like it was beneficial to have that time off."
Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch echoed his coach's sentiment.
"I think we'll continue to mix and match a little bit," Fisch said. "I don't know exactly how that will all play out yet."
Fisch offered praise for Robinson and his increased understanding of the game, even though he wouldn't yet name him as the presumptive starter moving forward.
"He showed that he is understanding the run game better," Fisch said. "He is understanding the stretch and cut. He's understanding the stretch and bounce and understanding when you're running outside zone what's your reads. Even earlier in the season, maybe we missed a read, because we were too fast to the hole and the block didn't develop quick enough. He's understanding when he's running inside he's got to run with lower pad level."
While Robinson may still get the lion's share of the touches, this is good news for Gerhart, who, before his injury, was averaging a measly 2.6 yards per carry on the season.
