Will Smith is bringing the date doctor to TV. According to Deadline, Smith's production company Overbrook Entertainment is bringing a half-hour TV adaption of "Hitch" to the small screen. The show, which is still in early development with no actors attached, will air on Fox.
Deadline reports that Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, who together wrote the 2008 romance flick "Made of Honor," will write the series for "Hitch" the TV show. When the film was released in 2005 it became a box office success earning $370 million.
The film is still shown on cable channels. According to Deadline, Smith has tried to turn the film into a television show on two separate occasions. The first time was in 2007 and the second in 2010, both with different writers.
It's not clear why the project fell through. Deadline described this latest attempt as "a workplace comedy that explores dating and sexual politics." In the film, Smith played a "date doctor" named Alex "Hitch" Hitchens who tried to set up Kevin James' character with a rich socialite. Actress Eva Mendes also starred in the film.
The social media reactions to the project have been mixed.
