Toby Keith's latest single, "Drunk Americans," has definitely caught the attention of a lot of Americans. And it's clear that a lot of them are celebrating with the superstar and, yes, toasting him with soaring radio play ... and maybe with a drink or two or three.
In its first week at radio, singer-songwriter and entertainer Keith's song that celebrates both the diversity and the unity of the U.S.A. prevails as the No. 1 Most Added tune on both the Billboard and Country Aircheck/Mediabase charts, according to The Boot. On the hit, the superstar sings about diversity in our society with a message of unity that says that once you're in a bar having a good time together the cultural barriers just wash away with the alcohol.
Having already recorded mega-hit bar songs, such as "Red Solo Cup," "Beer for My Horses," "Drinks After Work," "Get Drunk and Be Somebody" and "I Love This Bar," Keith knows how to spot a good drinking song-even from the far end of the bar.
Regarding his current hit, written by Brandy Clark, Bob DiPiero, and Shane McAnally, the superstar said, "'Drunk Americans' sounded like a combination of 'I Love This Bar', 'Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue,' and 'American Ride.' The first time I heard it, I knew I was going to have to go in and cut it. It felt like a smash to me," as quoted by The Boot.
Some of the "Drunk Americans" lyrics that caught Keith's musical ear are:
We ain't East, we ain't West.
We ain't left, we ain't right.
We ain't black, we ain't white.
We just came here to drink.
The success of "Drunk Americans" follows Keith's talent being recognized by the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which just announced that the singer-songwriter is one of their 2015 induction nominees. He joins the company of Tom Petty and Cat Stevens on the list. The Songwriter's Hall of Fame is dedicated to recognizing the work and lives of those composers and lyricists who create popular music around the world.
