Jim Parsons will lend his vocal prowess to Buddy the Elf in NBC's holiday musical special "Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas."
"The Big Bang Theory" star will lead an all-star cast in the one-hour animated special based on the 2003 holiday classic "Elf." The special will air on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
The voice cast also includes Mark Hamill, Ed Asner, Fred Armisen, Jay Leno, Matt Lauer, Gilbert Gottfried, Kate Micucci, Rachael MacFarlane, Max Charles and Steve Higgins.
Asner will reprise his role as Santa Claus from the movie. Santa will narrate the story of Buddy who travels to New York City in search of the father he never met. "Along the way his unrelenting cheer transforms the lives of everyone he meets and opens his father's eyes to the magic of Christmas," according to the NBC synopsis.
"Buddy's Musical Christmas" will combine the look and feel of the stop-motion Christmas specials as well as the "sharp sensibility of the modern-day classic holiday film," according to NBC. The special will also features nine songs including "Happy All the Time," "A Christmas Song," and "Nobody Cares About Santa Claus."
"Elf" starred Will Ferrell as the over-sized elf who heads to New York City in search of his father, played by James Caan. The live-action film directed by Jon Favreau grossed more than $220 million worldwide.
The holiday special will air after NBC premieres its holiday live production of "Peter Pan" starring Allison Williams and Christopher Walken on Thursday, Dec. 4. Last year, NBC staged a live production of "The Sound of Music" with Carrie Underwood.
Parson has won four Emmy Awards for his role as Sheldon Cooper on CBS's "The Big Bang Theory. He also received an Emmy nomination this past year for his role in HBO's "The Normal Heart."
