Wal - Mart may have missed the mark with marketing its plus - sized Halloween costumes.
The retail giant advertised the costumes as "Fat Girl Costumes" on its website, sparking controversy on social media, Business Insider reported on Monday. The discovery was first reported by Jezebel.
"Saloon Girl," "Female Vampire," and "Queen of Hearts" were some of the "fat girl" costumes being sold in the section.
By 11:50 a.m., the page seems to have disappeared from Wal - Mart's website.
The website had "adult plus" and "plus - size" options as well, making some suspect that Wal - Mart employed a number of similar names for the category to try and rake in better search results, according to My Fox 8.
A disgruntled shopper sent Jezebel a screenshot of the page, leading a backlash on Twitter.
Many users acknowledged that the page has since been taken down, but produced screen shots just in case some social media users missed it.
"I'd like to know the logic behind this #fail," Lauren Ludlow wrote on Twitter.
"Are you effing kidding me, @Walmart? A section for "fat girl costumes?" What the heck is wrong with you people? #rude #inappropriate #haters," Andrea B wrote.
"@Walmart Not sure labeling these as "Fat Girl Costumes" is the best approach #rude," wrote Kristyn Washburn.
Wal - Mart directly replied to Washburn, saying that "your comments and suggestions are important to us and help make Walmart even better. Thank you."
