The New York Giants will be without the services of stud middle linebacker Jon Beason for the remainder of the season, according to a report from NFL Media's Kimberly Jones.
Beason, who has an extensive injury history, will undergo season-ending surgery on his toe. He has appeared in only 25 games since the start of the 2011 season.
Just last week, Beason indicated that he was facing a coin flip as to whether or not his season would be over.
"Right now, I'd say it's 50-50," Beason said on WFAN-AM on Tuesday, according to Ebenezer Samuel of The New York Daily News. "I'm still deciding if the smart thing is to go ahead and get it fixed and get ready for next season."
Beason said he was "frustrated" with his condition, but pointed out he wasn't medically whole.
"I'm playing without a crucial ligament in my big toe," he said, per NBC Sports.
He initially sustained the injury over the summer, but chose not to undergo surgery then.
In his absence, Giants' coach Tom Coughlin indicated today that Jameel McClain would take over as the man in the middle, Samuel wrote.
Beason was initially brought to New York from the Carolina Panthers in a trade last season, and then signed to a three-year $16.8 million contract before this season.
The team was highly intrigued by his leadership skills at the time of the trade and the contract extension, though they possibly should have been more wary of his injury history.
