Sony plans to catch up to Microsoft in the console software game with an update to its PlayStation 4 set for release on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
The new firmware brings several features to the Japanese tech giant's console, such as game sharing, which the company refers to as Share Play, according to The Verge.
With this feature, players can invite their friends to watch and participate in games, and they don't need a copy of the game (purchased or downloaded) to join in, but they can only access content for one hour at a time.
Gamers will only need a PlayStation Plus subscription for certain scenarios when using Share Play. The host needs a subscription to give friends control of a game, and both parties need a Plus membership for multiplayer options.
However, no subscription is necessary for viewing the host's play.
The update also allows gamers to share saved gameplay highlights on YouTube, The Verge reported. Players can also use new custom themes that come with various colors for the screen to provide different "moods."
Sony said the new software will also make it easier for gamers to sort and organize things on the home screen, as well as broadcast gameplay live.
Tuesday will also see the release of a YouTube app and a USB Music Player app that lets gamers play music from any USB storage device while playing their favorite games, according to The Verge. However, PS4 owners won't be able to play videos during gameplay.
The software update for the PS4 will take place one day prior to the release of additional software updates for Vita, Vita TV, and the PlayStation app for iOS and Android.
