Mentally Challenged Teen Caged In Home For Special Needs Patients Freed By Michigan Police

A 19-year-old Michigan man was found to be living inside a cage when police arrived at a home for special needs patients last week to look into a civil disagreement, MLive reported on Saturday.

Permission was given for police to enter one of the bedrooms, where the grim discovery was made. The 19-year-old mentally challenged man was living in a cage – in bed with the door chained shut, according to the Huron County Sheriff's Department, 13 ABC reported.

Department of Human Services emergency personnel were brought to the scene. Two adults were seen being removed from the home at about 10 p.m. on Oct. 20. Two other children were also taken from the home after a court ruling on Oct. 25.

Abuse against disabled children has been in the news with some frequency over the past year. In July, police found an 11-year-old autistic boy locked in a kennel-like metal cage in California, CBS News reported.

In September, 46-year-old Kelli Stapleton, a former autism advocate, pleaded guilty to first-degree child abuse after trying to kill herself and her 15-year-old autistic daughter, NBC News reported.

Gigi Jordan is currently on trial for the poisoning death of her autistic son, In her testimony, Jordan said she feared her first ex - husband was planning to murder her and how her second ex - husband, her son's father, had tortured and raped the boy. She said she wanted to kill her son to keep him away from further abuse, the New York Times reported.
