To paraphrase everyone's favorite villain, Darth Vader: "The Force is strong with these ones..."
"Star Wars: X-Wing" and its sequel, "Star Wars: TIE Fighter," will get special edition digital releases through Good Old Games (GOG.com), according to announcements exposed by members of the GOG forums and Kotaku.
This is the first time these awesome, LucasArts space combat sims, which first hit DOS computers (yes, that's pre-Windows kids...) in the early 90's, will be available via digital distribution.
This find forced GOG.com to post an official announcement a little early; the site has been teasing a new publishing deal that would be announced today. Both "X-Wing" and "TIE Fighter" are coming to the digital distribution service as part of a new relationship with Disney that will lead to approximately 30 games being released via GOG.com without DRM protection.
"Star Wars: X-Wing Special Edition" will include the "Star Wars: X-Wing Collector's CD-ROM" and both "Tour of Duty" expansions: "Imperial Pursuit" and "B-Wing." The special edition release of "Star Wars: TIE Fighter" will include the "Defender of the Empire" expansion, both in the 1994 and 1998 versions. Both games will only cost a paltry $9.99 each.
Other LucasArts games that are part of the Disney and GOG.com partnership will include venerable classics such as "Sam & Max Hit the Road," "The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition," "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis" and "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic."
