Sarah Hyland of "Modern Family" Breaks Her Silence on Abusive Relationship (VIDEO)

Breaking her silence Tuesday, over a five-year long abusive relationship with Matt Prokop, "Modern Family's" Sarah Hyland cited Robert Frost's quote: "The only way out is through," as having helped her cope through this difficult phase.

At The Meredith Vieira Show, where she sat with her beloved dog Barkley Bixby, Hyland also referred to a Dylan Thomas poem saying, "Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light,' which is one of my favorite poems."

"People have to go through things in order to become the person they are today, and that's that," she further said.

Hyland, a victim of domestic abuse, was granted a temporary restraining order against Matt last month after she accused the actor of terrorizing her by abusing her verbally as well as physically during the last four years of their relationship, Inqusitr reports.

Hyland had reported in court documents stating that the 24-year-old actor "relentlessly bombarded me with vile, threatening and emotionally disturbing texts and voice mails including his own suicide threats." She added that his grip was so tight that it almost suffocated her. Referring to an incident in May, this year, she said: "I was scared and in fear for my life" when he pinned her against a car, making offensive remarks and choking her, the Daily Mail reports.

Hyland turned to her television mother Julie Bowen for support. Bowen advised the 23-year-old to leave her home as it wasn't safe. Bowen said: "I love Sarah and I support her wholeheartedly, and I didn't do anything special at all. Nothing that you wouldn't do for anybody who's going through a break-up. I think it just got a lot of attention because she's an adorably cute person who's on TV."

According to Fashion Times, the two had met while auditioning for "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" in 2008 and have also co-starred in Disney's "Geek Charming."
