An hour-long pregame show. A Kendrick Lamar concert. All for nothing as Cleveland lost their much-hyped season opener Thursday night against the New York Knicks, 95-90. LeBron James struggled for most of the game, going 5-of-15 from the field for 17 points while committing eight turnovers.
"I didn't press. I didn't do much," James said, via ESPN. "... I was throwing passes where I thought some of my teammates were. Those things will come."
Kyrie Irving led the Cavs with 22 points and seven assists, and Kevin Love added 19 points and 14 rebounds. Irving, who turned the ball over four times, blamed himself for not properly executing some of the plays.
"For us, it's just a better communication between me and Coach Blatt," he said. "That's basically what it boils down to. I'm his point guard out there, and some things that I see, you know, he has plays in his mind and I have plays in my mind as well.
"We're just going to continue to grow. It's a process. Within practice, we kind of switch on and off [calling the plays], but for us it's about what's going on out there on the court and what he sees and what I see, and hopefully we can get on the same page pretty soon."
Chicago, meanwhile is 1-0 after routing the Knicks on Wednesday. Taj Gibson led Chicago's scorers with 22 points off the bench, and Pau Gasol added 21 points and 11 rebounds. Derrick Rose, in his first game back since undergoing knee surgery last season, had 13 points in 21 minutes.
"I think it's a lot of pressure off (Rose's) shoulders because we have, I think, a variety of weapons, so he doesn't have that pressure on himself to be able to score and force things," said Gasol.
