Santa Monica College Shooting Leaves Several Injured, Including Gunman

A shooting at Santa Monica College has left several people, including the person believed to be the gunman, injured.

Police stationed at the Santa Monica, Calif. community college have confirmed that a handful of victims were harmed at the shooting, but have not released details about how they currently are faring. According to NBC, one person who some said opened fire initially was hit by a bullet, then moved to a nearby hospital.

After the shooting Friday afternoon, the school went on lockdown. All schools in the beach town of Santa Monica also went on lockdown, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District told NBC.

Students were told to stay away from the campus, located in the 1900 block of Pico Boulevard. Those already on the school's grounds were told to seek refuge in a safe place and stay there.

Meanwhile, just a few blocks north of the campus, President Barack Obama attended a fundraiser.

But Secret Service spokesperson Edwin M. Donovan said that the President was not affected by the shootings.

"We are aware of the incident and it is not impacting the visit," Donovan told NBC. "It's a local police matter at this point."

At around noon on Friday, witnesses at the school saw a "fully armed" person wielding a firearm in the direction of vehicles in the vicinity. According to the California Highway Patrol, the gunman started shooting a round of bullets towards cars and a bus driving by.

Some passengers on public transportation were injured, officials reported.

Several bystanders and witnesses called 911, with reports of open fire close by.

CHP Sgt. Denise Joslin said that, although she and her department were unsure, they had a suspicion that there could have been others.

"We are aware of at least one suspect, there may possibly be others," she said.
