Facebook is apparently listening to users' concerns about privacy with the introduction of a custom Tor link.
Tor provides a way for people to go on the Internet without sharing their IP address, physical location and other information that can help identify them, according to The Verge. Those who download the software are able to hide the make and model of their computer while going to their favorite websites.
The move gives Tor users fighting government censorship of the Internet in countries like China and Iran an opportunity to use Facebook without their identifying information being compromised. As a result, the social network has a chance to grow and reach more people around the world.
Tor users were able to access Facebook before the debut of the new URL, but Facebook has received complaints over the years about the site not working on their Tor browser, Gizmodo reported. Some of these complaints involved receiving unusual ads and misplacement of fonts.
The new link establishes Facebook as the first website to have a Certificate Authority to launch a dedicated Tor link and certified connection through the browser.
A Certificate Authority is a method used to establish secure Internet connections with users, The Verge reported.
The new link is the latest privacy feature introduced by Facebook, with previous features including a new method for logging into third-party mobile apps anonymously through the website.
