Today is not a good day for drug testing in MMA, as four fighters who participated in Bellator 127 failed drug tests held after the event.
The post-fight drug tests were issued by the California State Athletic Commission for Keith Berry, Rob Emerson, Fernando Gonzalez, and Nick Moghaddam, according to MMA Fighting.
Berry and Moghaddam tested positive for marijuana metabolites and elevated ratios of testosterone-to-epitestosterone, Emerson was found to have traces of the prescription drug Modafinil in his system, and Gonzalez tested positive for marijuana.
Modafinil is currently marketed in the U.S. as Provigil, and was originally created to treat narcolepsy, sherdog.com reported.
Bellator 127 was held on Oct. 3rd in Temecula, Calif. and had Berry, a Strikeforce and World Extreme Cagefighting veteran, beat Joe Pacheco in a preliminary fight and Gonzalez win his preliminary bout against Karo Parisyan. Moghaddam lost to Ray Sloan via unanimous decision, and Emerson lost to Rafael Silva the same way.
Bellator President Scott Coker addressed the issue on Friday morning, saying the use of performance-enhancing drugs will not be tolerated in the promotion, MMA Fighting reported.
"I want to make it very clear that under new management, Bellator simply will not stand for performance-enhancing drugs inside our cage," he said. "We fully support the California State Athletic Commission in their process, and stand by any disciplinary action handed out by Commissioner Andy Foster and CSAC."
