HIV-Positive Woman Tried To Infect Walmart Employee While Stealing Food, Texas Police Say

An HIV-positive woman tried to infect a Walmart employee she attacked in an attempt to steal food from one of the discount chain's Texas stores, police said.

Diamond Lawrence, 25, tried to leave the Walmart in Dallas on Tuesday without paying for the $11 worth of food she stole from the frozen food section, according to a police report obtained by NBC Dallas-Fort Wroth.

An employee confronted Lawrence and escorted her back inside, during which Lawrence announced she was HIV positive, the employee told police.

"I can infect whomever I please," Lawrence said according to the worker, the station reported.

Lawrence, who police said had on a medical wristband confirming her HIV status, struck the male employee and tried to scratch his neck. Police said she deliberately tried to infect him with HIV by drawing blood.

"You're welcome," the alleged thief kept saying after the attack, NBC DFW reported.

Dallas-Fire Rescue arrived at the Forest Lane Walmart to inspect the worker and determined no bodily fluids were exchanged, which is one of the ways the virus is spread.

Walmart, which doesn't prosecute those who steal small amounts, only asked that Lawrence never come back to that location. But Lawrence was arrested anyway after police learned she had an outstanding arrest warrant for public intoxication and another for an invalid driver's license.

She is being held on $1,500 bail at the Dallas County Jail.
