DC Comics Announces New Event Series 'Convergence'

In what should be called the "Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better Wars," DC Comics officially announced today that its entire superhero line will be placed on hold in April and May, paving the way for the expansive nine-week event series titled "Convergence."

The timing coincides with the final phase of the company's move from New York City to Burbank, California, but it also seems to be a direct response to Marvel's rebooted "Secret Wars" event series that was announced just before the New York Comic Con in October.

"Convergence" will launch April 1 with a zero issue that spins out of the finales of "Earth 2: World's End" and "The New 52: Futures End," leading to an eight-part main series and 40 two-part miniseries that scrutinize the worlds from the past eight decades of the DC Universe, and the heroes and villains they contain, USA Today reported.

According to DC co-publisher Jim Lee, the event will confront the most-asked questions since DC rebooted its superhero line in 2011 with the "New 52": whether key stories in DC history still "count" in continuity, and what happened to some of the beloved characters that haven't been reintroduced in the past three years.

"What we're really addressing is they all exist and have existed and exist within the framework of the New 52," Lee told the newspaper. "'Convergence' is in many ways the most meta epic event we've done."

The miniseries will also present a new villain, Tellos, who is "born of Brainiac and this mysterious planet."

Although "Convergence" will involve a veritable "who's who" of comic creators, the main plot line will be written by veteran TV scribe Jeff King ("White Collar," "Continuum"), making his comics debut. Dan Jurgens will co-write the zero issue with him, while Scott Lobdell will assist with the overarching outline of the series.
