Common Spider Appears To Be Venomous

A common spider that is often spotted inside kitchens during the fall was surprisingly found to have a venomous bite.

Identified as a broad faced sac spider, the critter was caught after crawling up the leg of a Connecticut woman and taking a poisonous bite of her leg, reports Live Science. The 50-year-old woman brought the spider to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Sciences.

The scientists published the study on the broad faced spider in the Journal of Medical Entomology.

The broad faced sac spider's victim described the bite as feeling "like the sting of a wasp," Charles Vossbrinck, a co-author of the study and a scientist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, tells Live Science.

The bite became red and slightly swollen immediately from the venom, but she didn't require any medical attention, reports Live Science.

"This is a hunting spider," Vossbrinck tells Live Science. "They are hunting spiders, and then there are those that rely mostly on a web to catch prey."

The broad faced sac spider is more prone to being found outside since they are hunters, reports Live Science. They are also being spotted indoors since they tend to hang out near buildings, giving them the opportunity to wander inside.
