Meth Found In Girl's Candy Bag

An 8-year-old girl got more than candy in her Halloween bag, and police are trying to determine how a plastic bag of methamphetamine ended up in her possession, Contra Costa Times reported on Tuesday.

The girl was trick-or-treating in Hercules, CA and her parents found a .1 gram plastic bag of methamphetamine when they were looking through her candy after she returned home, police said. They are reminding parents to check their children's candy bags before letting them eat.

"He had been checking his child's Halloween candy after putting it away on Halloween night, and while checking it found the baggie and suspected it was illegal drugs. He wanted to report it," Hercules Police Sgt. Ezra Tafesse told NBC Bay Area, referring to the child's father.

Tafesse said that even the small amount the girl found was enough to face felony charges for possessing a controlled substance.

Jazmine Louie, a nearby resident, said her younger siblings probably won't be able to have any candy following the incident.

"My mom will probably toss it now," she said.

The ground the girl covered while trick-or-treating is about a quarter square mile. Though it is quite unusual for kids to have drugs slipped into their Halloween candy, it happens occasionally, police said. School administrators know about the incident and police are hoping word will get to parents to check their children's candy carefully.
