Jason Kidd and the Brooklyn Nets had a less than amicable split. Kidd sought to increase his authority over personnel decisions which Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov declined. After a messy spat, Kidd was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks for two second-round picks this past summer. Prokhorov isn't losing any sleep over it, though.
"I think there is a nice proverb in English: Don't let the door hit you where the good Lord has split you," Prokhorov said Monday. "So I think that each side, we did what we thought was the best and I like what we have now.
"I think our structure is optimal. We have a very strong experienced coach and a very strong GM (in) Billy King."
Someone needs to make T-shirts with that Prokhorvian proverb. When pushed on the subject, the Russian billionaire explained why he has no lingering bitterness.
"I think we shouldn't get mad. I think we should get even. And we will see it on the court."
Lionel Hollins, who recently led the Memphis Grizzlies to the Western Conference Finals in the 2012-2013 season, was hired to replace Kidd while the franchise undergoes a directional shift. The team had championship aspirations when Prokhorov first got here, trading for Deron Williams, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett over the last few years. However, a record $90.57 million luxury tax bill and a total of roughly $197 million spent on this roster last season has caused Prokhorov to mandate that his team be "reasonable" and have a "balance" of veteran players and younger talent.
Grantland.com reported that Brooklyn lost $144 million over the course of last season in basketball operating costs.
"It's not a big deal," Prokhorov said about the $144 million figure. "Because I personally compensate this money from my pocket."
Prokhorov also commented on the rumors that he is looking to sell the Nets.
"My position is that I will not give up control of the team," Prokhorov said. "But you know, I am quite happy when somebody sends me a nice offer without taking my controlling interest. I think for the time being nothing is imminent. But still I think it is not bad just to listen."
The Nets are 2-1 this season and scheduled to play the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight at 7:30 PM.
