Microsoft and Dropbox Team Up to Provide Dropbox Access to Office Users

Microsoft and Dropbox announced Tuesday that they are teaming up to further connect Office and Dropbox users.

The collaboration will give users of both companies a variety of new abilities, such as editing Office files from the Dropbox mobile app and syncing changes, which will be automatically saved across different devices, according to ZDNet.

Users will also be able to access Dropbox files from the Office app, save new files to Dropbox, and sync docs while staying on the Office app. Another capability will be sharing Dropbox links and documents from Office, which users can do by sending a link from Dropbox.

Dropbox shared the news on its blog, writing that the new abilities will be made available to Dropbox users on Android and iOS when Office for iOS and Android receives "the next updates." The company added that it is "home to over 35 billion Office documents, spreadsheets and presentations."

The iOS update, which is expected to launch in the next few weeks, will let Dropbox users link their account directly to iPad apps for Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, The Verge reported.

Kirk Koenigsbauer, head of Microsoft's Office Engineering team, said Dropbox access was the first addition customers wanted for their iPads and Office.

"They want access to make sure customers have a great experience," Koenigsbauer said.
