Hewlett-Packard (HP) is looking to get back into the computer gaming market with the release of its $1,500 Omen gaming laptop.
Features of the tech giant's new device include an Intel i7 4710HQ CPU with 8 GB of RAM, a 128 GB solid-state drive, and an Nvidia GeForce 860M graphics card with 2 GB of VRAM, according to The Christian Monitor. The laptop is priced at $1,500 and will compete with other gaming laptops like the $999 Alienware 13 and the $1.050 Lenovo Y50.
HP recently announced that it will split into two companies, which are expected to revolve around corporate-focused hardware and service operations and consumer-focused computer and printer business.
Additional features of the 4.68-pound Omen also include a 15.6-inch, 1080p touchscreen and a 4-cell, 58WHr lithium ion battery, which the Palo Alto, California-based company says will keep the laptop up and running for four hours and 45 minutes, PCWorld reported.
"We know that 60 percent of the people who use PCs game regularly," said Mike Nash, vice president of product management at HP, who also discussed the challenges the company faced in making sure this audience would enjoy using the laptop. "We've got to get the performance right, specifically frame rates. We've got to get the portability right. And we have to create a unique gaming experience."
Nash added that frames play just as much of a role in the gaming experience as display and performance, since PC gamers don't want to encounter regularly chopped frames if they want to have fun, The Christian Monitor reported.
"In other words: If you really care about gaming performance, you'll take 30-plus fps on a 'low' resolution over slow frame rates on a trendy 4K display," he said.
HP is faced with several competitors as it tries to get on top of the PC gaming industry, such as Alienware and Razer.
