Election 2014: Virginia Voting Machines Malfunction

Voting machines at several Virginia precincts are malfunctioning today during the midterm elections.

The machines are casting out votes for the wrong candidates because the touch sensor on the screen is not properly aligned with the text on the screen, reports Daily Progress.

Shaun Kenney, executive director of the Republican Party of Virginia, wrote a letter this morning to the Virginia Department of Elections to try and get the issue straightened out.

"Authorized representatives have identified significant voting machine issues in at least four different Congressional Districts," Kenney writes. "The errors relate to the calibration of DRE touch screen machines. Our team has alerted the Electoral Boards in the jurisdictions where these problems have occurred."

The issue was reportedly occurring in the following precincts:

Arlington County
Ballston-0004

Prince William County
Buckland Mills-0110

Spotsylvania County
Gayle-0704

City of Virginia Beach
Bonney-040
Centreville-044Bayside
Great Neck
Stratford Chase
Acredale
Colonial
Alanton
Witchduck
Sherry Park
Homestead
Green Run

The Virginia Department of Elections responded to the complaint with the following statement:

Virginia Beach and Newport News are experiencing technical difficulties with their AccuVote TSX Touch Screen voting machines. These technical difficulties are being addressed by both localities' teams of voting equipment technicians in conjunction with AccuVote vendors. Based on discussions with local election officials, the issues appear related to touch screen calibration.

Virginia voters, especially, are urged by the elections department to double check their ballots before submitting them.
