To say that Taylor Swift's pop album "1989" had a phenomenal debut week would be right on the money. Literally. Swift's money.
Here's what the album accomplished in its first week of release:
With 1.287 million copies of "1989" (the year 24-year-old Swift was born) sold, it becomes the first million-selling album of 2014.
That means, two copies of "1989" were snatched up by eager Swift fans every second of last week, according to USA Today.
In its first week of sales, "1989" catapulted itself into being the year's second best-selling album overall, behind the "Frozen" soundtrack.
"1989" is instantly (ok, in one week) the best-selling album in 12 years.
With the mind-boggling launch of "1989," Swift made more history. She is the first act ever to have three albums sell a million copies in a week. Back in 2010, her "Speak Now" album racked up 1.047 in sales. And in 2012, her "Red" album debuted with 1.21 million in sales.
Retail chain Target carried a deluxe edition of the album with six additional tracks, and sold 470,000 copies. Swift's "1989" sold more copies at Target than the year's next-highest debut, Coldplay's "Ghost Stories" with 383,000 sold, USA Today reported.
"So it's not just that Taylor Swift is doing big numbers. She's doing big numbers at a time when no one else is doing big numbers. Taylor Swift is more than just a pop music anomaly," NPR stated about the singer.
