Pau Gasol was a near lock to leave the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency last summer. L.A. suffered through one of the worst seasons in franchise history, and Kobe Bryant's long-term health had become a major question mark. Additionally, Gasol had rocky relationships with Lakers' coaches over the past two seasons.
It was obvious that Gasol would have his pick of contenders to play for as one of the most skilled big men in the NBA. But which contender would woo him the best? The Chicago Bulls ultimately won the Gasol sweepstakes with a three-year deal worth north of $22 million, but they had competition for the four-time All-Star.
The Oklahoma City Thunder had a collection of young stars, including reigning MVP Kevin Durant. But it seems that Oklahoma City's lack of worldly attractions played a significant role in Gasol's decision making.
Sam Amick of USA Today tweeted:
Dollar amount was of little importance to Gasol at this stage of his career. But an area that offered stimulation outside of basketball was clearly important to the Spaniard. Gasol's decision speaks to a larger stigma associated with the Thunder. They may have a rare collection of young talent, but outside factors such as night life, weather and other things clearly puts small market teams, such as OKC, at a disadvantage in free agency.
