Tesla Motors announced Wednesday that it is delaying the launch of its Model X SUV, showing it is focused on releasing a quality vehicle.
The delay is due to the need for more testing for the sports utility vehicle, which is the third major addition to the electric carmaker's lineup, according to CNET. Electric car fans will have to wait until the third quarter of 2015 to get their hands on the Model X.
"This ... is a legitimate criticism of Tesla- we prefer to forgo revenue, rather than bring a product to market that does not delight customers," Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, wrote in a letter to shareholders. "Doing so negatively affects the short term, but positively affects the long term."
Wednesday's delay is the most recent to take place for the Model X, which was announced in 2012 with an initial release date of 2013 that would be delayed to 2014, TechCrunch reported.
The need for testing is due to several flaws Tesla found in its SUV.
"Making one of something is easy," Musk told investors. "[But] we need to make a bunch to know [there's a problem] there."
The Model X is currently going through production at Tesla's Fremont, California, factory, where the company produces its Model S electric sedan, CNET reported.
Tesla plans to provide less Model S options and powertrain combinations in order to make the manufacturing process less complicated.
Musk believes Tesla will experience a 50-percent increase in demand for the Model S next year, The Register reported. He added that while engineering and production for the Model X is difficult, he believes the electric SUV will be "something special," when it becomes available to customers.
