The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are suffering through an abysmal 1-7 season right now. Tuesday it was announced that quarterback Mike Glennon will be replaced in the starting lineup by Josh McCown. McCown started the team's first two-plus games before going down with a thumb injury and losing his job due to poor play.
All this is to say that coach Lovie Smith knows his quarterbacks need to step up their game.
"I think we need better play at the quarterback position right now. You start with that. ... [Josh McCown] was our starter before. ... We need a little boost. It's like that with all positions. If the play isn't what we think it should be, we see if there's another option we should look at," Smith said, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
"If I didn't feel good about what he would do for us, we wouldn't go this direction. We think that we're doing some good things right now, and if that quarterback position can give us a few more plays, we can take off."
Glennon led the Bucs to their only win of the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 4, but the team has now lost four straight games.
"Mike has gone back into the same position as we started," Smith said.
McCown has thrown for 420 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 63% of his passes. Glennon has thrown for 1,417 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 58% of his passes. Neither signal-caller has a QBR above 60.
The Bucs will play the Atlanta Falcons (2-6) this weekend.
