No. 21 Clemson (6-2) bounced back from an uneven start to the season with five straight wins. Their latest win - a 16-6 victory Oct. 25 against Syracuse - saw the Tigers win their second consecutive game without injured freshman quarterback Deshaun Watson, whom coach Dabo Swinney said is healthy enough to start Thursday night if needed.
"It'll probably be the most watched pregame warmup we have," Swinney told reporters, via ESPN. "He really looks good."
Swinney said the condition of Watson, who had been originally slated to return Nov. 15, improved greatly over the bye week and his finger doesn't appear to be hindering his throws.
Although Clemson's offense has sputtered without Watson, freshman running back Wayne Gallman had a productive day on the ground against Syracuse, running for 101 yards on 28 carries.
Wake Forest, meanwhile, has turned in a forgettable season. They're 2-6 after losing four straight, including Oct. 25's 23-17 loss against Boston College. The Demon Deacons rank last among the 125 FBS schools in total offense (213.5) and rushing (34.5), according to ESPN, and rank 122th in scoring (14.8 ppg).
"We're learning some painful lessons," said first-year coach Dave Clawson. "We've got a lot of things to clean up. We're early in this process and if we can establish effort as a starting point then we are headed in the right direction."
