For years there have been rumors of an NFL franchise moving to Los Angeles or even London. Both relocations made a certain amount of sense. L.A. is the second biggest market in the U.S. and could prove a very profitable location for the NFL should it move a team back to the city. London has hosted at least one regular season game every year since 2007. The NFL is constantly trying to expand its reach into international markets. A team based out of London permanently would certainly accomplish that.
But now a new city has emerged as a dark horse candidate: San Antonio.
"Former Mayor Henry Cisneros will lead a group of San Antonio governmental and civic leaders headed who'll meet with Oakland Raiders officials Friday in the Bay Area," wrote Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News.
Orsborn explains that in recent months, "the Raiders deemed the Alamodome as an NFL-ready facility following a visit by two team officials to a UTSA game and have exchanged information with city leaders. The Raiders and the city also shared the cost of a survey of fans in South and Central Texas to gauge their interest in supporting the team."
Cisneros went on to say that the deal is a "very clear 50-50 proposition" that the Raiders could relocate to San Antonio.
However, ESPN's Raiders reporter Bill Williamson does not share Cisneros' optimism. "San Antonio is considered a longshot to land the team," Williamson wrote.
