A Florida woman who forced her two young children to drink toilet cleaner with her told authorities she thought she was doing the right thing.
Amelia West, 28, told apparently told authorities she "thought it would be better if she and her two children would go to Heaven and be with God," according to police documents reviewed by HLNtv.
She fed her children, a 3-month-old girl and a 2-year-old boy, the toilet bowl cleaner by putting it in one child's sippy cup and pouring it into the other's mouth straight from the bottle, reports HLN.
After West and her two children consumed the toilet bowl cleaner she proceeded to call her husband who was out of town for work. Her husband, who was concerned for his children's safety, called his parents who then phoned 911.
The children were taken to the hospital upon the arrival of authorities. The toilet bowl cleaner being consumed, luckily for the kids, was 7th Generation, a non-toxic brand, HLN reports.
After the children's hospital visit they were sent to the Department of Children and Family Services, who placed the children with other family members while their mother is being held in jail.
West's public defender, Matt Phillips, plans to have her evaluated to determine her mental state.
"It appears Mrs. West is suffering from a severe mental illness," said Phillips to HLN. "This is a case that involves some mental illness issues. That will be my first task to get her diagnosed and get a clearer picture of her mental state. That is what this case is about."
West will be arraigned on Nov. 26.
