You've certainly got to give Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll points for persistence – but maybe a little less so for creativity.
Only hours after jettisoning mercurial wide receiver/petulant headache Percy Harvin to the New York Jets, Carroll reached out to another former mercurial wide receiver/petulant headache in an attempt to replace him.
Carroll made an offer to retired wide receiver and future Hall of Famer Randy Moss to fill the void left by Harvin's departure, according to Jay Glazer, via The Denver Post.
The 37-year-old Moss however declined the offer, telling the folks on Fox Sports' "The Pete Shrager Podcast" that the only reason he'd come out of retirement at this point is to play with quarterback Peyton Manning.
"I'm gonna tell you this, for me to come out of retirement for a player such as Peyton Manning, I would consider that," Moss said. "I really would consider it. I'm still in great shape, I can still run. I'm not the most old, but just by looking at the things I see on Sundays, I can still go out there and catch some passes and catch some touchdowns."
Moss also said that the way Carroll and the Seahawks dealt with the Harvin situation might have directly influenced his decision not to accept their offer.
"I think the Percy Harvin situation was bad," Moss said, per CSNBayArea.com, before recounting the more positive moments of Harvin's tenure with the team.
"Then when things start going bad, we start hearing all of these things coming out of the Seahawks camp. I'm not saying they're true and I'm not saying they're false. If it was that big of a problem – he's fighting at the Super Bowl and he's becoming a problem in the locker room – well, no one such as coach [Pete] Carroll or quarterback [Russell] Wilson, or anybody like that, veteran guys, to be able to pull him aside and talk to him. "
Moss went on to question the veteran leadership, or apparent lack thereof, in Seattle.
"I was just wondering where the veteran leadership was," Moss stated. "And if the veteran leadership did try to reach out to Percy Harvin, was he that much gone mentally and not caring, that he just told everybody 'just let me do this, and let me be me?'
"We don't know what went on in-house. All I'm just saying was it could've been handle in a different way. Don't wait till a guy is gone to air out the dirty laundry, is all I'm saying."
Now, Harvin is out of Seattle and it doesn't sound like Moss will be suiting up again for an NFL team anytime soon – unless, of course, Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos come calling.
