The competitive fan bases for One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer settled on a draw in the MTV Europe Music Awards' voting booth.
Each of their favorite boy bands collected three awards, the most for any act, at the global music event in Glasgow, Scotland on Nov. 9. 5 Seconds of Summer found success in the categories for breakout acts, while One Direction picked up wins against the more established talent.
One Direction fans can claim bragging rights as the "Biggest Fans," a vote based on their social media activity on Twitter and Instagram. MTV asked fans for 1D, 5SOS, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande to tweet or caption an Instagram pic with the hashtag #EMABiggestFans plus their favorite artist's name.
The British boy band also picked up wins for Best Pop Act, a category that included 5 Seconds, and Best Live Act, beating out showstoppers such as Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake.
The 5SOS fans voted the Aussie rockers as the Best Push Act, an award given to the most explosive new act in music. 5 Seconds of Summer also picked up awards for Artist on the Rise and Best New Act.
Nicki Minaj hosted the 21st annual EMA awards held at Scotland SSE Hydro arena. She performed along with Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, Enrique Inglesias, U2, Alicia Keys, Kiesza, Royal Blood and Charlie XCX.
Slash presented Ozzy Osbourne with the Global Icon award. He also led Myles Kennedy, The Conspirators and Simon Neil in an epic performance of Osbourne's "Crazy Train."
