Did Calvin Klein get a plus-size model?
Calvin Klein recently debuted a new underwear advertisement featuring model Myla Dalbesio, who considers herself to be plus-size.
"It's kind of confusing because I'm a bigger girl," Dalbesio told Elle. "I'm not the biggest girl on the market but I'm definitely bigger than all the girls [Calvin Klein] has ever worked with, so that is really intimidating."
Some people are happy to see a "bigger girl" as the face of a clothing campaign. The issue being debated is Dalbesio's size. She wears either a size 8 or 10 - depending on who you ask.
The average dress size in America is 14 and is steadily increasing, Woman's Wear Daily reported.
"I'm in the middle," Dalbesio told Elle of her size. "I'm not skinny enough to be with the skinny girls and I'm not large enough to be with the large girls and I haven't been able to find my place. This [campaign] was such a great feeling."
Calvin Klein has not directly comment on the issue, but when the campaign began a company spokeswoman released a statement about the new underwear line:
"The Perfectly Fit line was created to celebrate and cater to the needs of different women, and these images are intended to communicate that our new line is more inclusive and available in several silhouettes in an extensive range of sizes."
Dalbesio said in her interview with Elle that the brand never directly told her that she was hired becasue of her curvier frame, although she is the biggest model of the group. She will be modeling alongside Jourdan Dunn, Amanda Wellsh, Ji Hye Park and Lara Stone.
"It's not like [Calvin Klein] released this campaign and were like 'Whoa, look, there's this plus size girl in our campaign,'" Dalbesio said to Elle. "They released me in this campaign with everyone else; there's no distinction. It's not a separate section for plus size girls."
