Netflix will add "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." to its online streaming service on Nov. 20.
"S.H.I.E.L.D." stumbled out of the gate when it premiered in 2013. It trudged through most of its first season until "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" handed Agent Phil Coulson and his team a big-time mess. The show has returned much stronger in its second season as the remaining S.H.I.E.L.D. agents strike back against the resurgent Hydra organization.
Clark Gregg reprised his role as Coulson from the Marvel films for the Marvel TV series. His co-stars include Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Brett Dalton, Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain de Caestecker.
Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel TV, originally pitched the idea of a TV series to "The Avengers" director Joss Whedon right after that film's premiere in 2012. They chose to develop the show around Agent Coulson, who had starred in all the Marvel movies up to that point except "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "The Incredible Hulk."
The show idea only had one problem: Whedon had killed Coulson in the middle of "The Avengers" movie.
"When we first started talking about doing the show, [Whedon] said, 'Well, we can't do the show without Coulson.' And I said, 'The problem is you killed him," Loeb said at PaleyFest NY in October. "We talked about does the show take place five years ago... and then he just does what Joss does, this little enigmatic smile, and says, 'No, I think I know.'"
Netflix and Marvel TV inked a deal last year to develop four original series based on four of Marvel's "popular street-hero characters," according to Variety. The first show "Daredevil" will premiere next year. The blind super-hero will be followed by "Jessica Jones," "Iron Fist" and "Luke Cage."
Marvel fans can also stream "The Avengers."
